direction in life

Have you ever wondered, “What TF am I doing with my life?” “What is even the meaning of life?” And “What should I do with my life?”

You are not alone. We all question our existence at some point in time. It could be triggered by a horrid day at work, or a nasty fight with your bae, or even an exhausting day where nothing seems to be going your way.

These questions can come to you in the face of criticism. I mean, we’ve all got people in our lives who cast a shadow of doubt on what we do, right? When I started down the road to follow my purpose, I got flak from EVERYONE!

“This is not a career.”
“You are wasting your time.”
“What are we going to tell people?”
“Why can’t you be like everyone else?”

But that’s the thing, isn’t it? None of us are like anyone else. We are each our own person. We come into this world with a unique purpose, a light that only we can shine! All of us have different experiences, and doshas, and strengths, and weaknesses, and together they make this magic sauce that’s our essence. And in understanding that essence lies your answer to, “what should I do with my life?”

You should live your purpose before everything else.
Express your best self with your unique gifts.
Experience life for all it has to offer and not live boxed into someone else’s idea of it.
Do everything that you want to do – use your magic sauce and layout a fantastic buffet of offerings!

Sounds great, right? But how do you go about doing it?

Three simple steps to find answers

Well, you could start by listening to this podcast.

The thing is, when we are seeking answers to life, when we want to find our purpose, it doesn’t help to think with your rational mind. Rationality makes you think, whereas to discover your purpose, you need to feel! You need to channel your highest self, break your conditioning, or at least push it in the background, and listen to your consciousness.

What is it telling you? How do you feel about your life? Where do you want to be in life? How do you want to impact those around you?

To get the answers that resonate with you, you need to ask the right questions.

1. What gets your vibe going?

To figure out what to do with your life, maybe the best place to start is to understand what excites you. If you aren’t excited about what you do, you are probably not going to see it through. Even if you pull through till the end, you’d probably be miserable or at least bored out of your mind! And trust me, you weren’t given this life to be bored!!! And if you are like me, this will be a loooong list!

2. How do you work your magic?

What is your superpower? What are some things that you are really good at? You know, this whole working on your weakness line of thought is old school. What you need to do is to polish up your strengths and make them shine brighter than anything else. So, figure out what you are good at doing. Make a list. Ask people around you to give their perspective on what you are good at. And if doing that excites you, then you’ve got a pretty good start at finding out what you need to do in life.

3. What the world needs?

That’s where the pieces finally fall in place, and you get your answer to what you need to do. And when you can put your finger on this, you’ll literally dance your way to your Dharma. Finding out what the world needs often comes to you in the form of obstacles you’ve already overcome. For example, if you are a single parent and you can’t find a good support system, there is a gap you can fill. Or if you are a dancer, and you went through an injury, you could help people rehabilitate through dance.

The sweet spot at the intersection of these answers is your Ikigai. Evolving from traditional Japanese medicine, Ikigai is about waking up to joy and living a life of purpose and meaning. It doesn’t have to take long! In fact, you can do this one-minute exercise to find your purpose right now!

Four fears to get rid of and finding the courage to act

Here’s the thing. Sometimes, even when you find what you want to do with your life, it’s not easy to act on it. There are so many fears that hold us back from going out and claiming our destiny. When I was writing my book, there were four obstacles that kept coming up over and over again when I asked people why they were not following their purpose.

  1. Confusion!

Today there is so much choice and so much possibility that deciding what you should do could be quite confusing. And sometimes, so many different things appeal to you that you don’t know what your purpose is. The thing is that your purpose doesn’t manifest with one thing alone. It can be expressed in many ways as you move through life. You don’t have to choose one thing and be stuck with it!If you are confused, that means you aren’t listening to your intuition. The Universe is always sending you what you need to do at any point in life, and if you open yourself up to listening, confusion has no place to exist. But if you are confused, that’s a good sign. Confusion is a higher vibration than apathy. It’s a sign you’re on the path of discovering your Dharma. You can’t gain clarity without first going through confusion.

  2. Not being good enough.

No matter how confident you are of your gifts, the imposter syndrome has a way of sneaking in and making you doubt yourself. Especially when you are trying to move in a new direction, to go down a route that doesn’t make sense to others around you, their questions can add a seed of doubt to your plans. You need to realize that this is a borrowed fear. You need to accept that you don’t need to be perfect. Learn to trust in your intuition. You don’t even have to go all-in, start small, but just get started!

  3. Not Knowing Where to Start.

When you know what you want, but nothing seems to be going your way, it’s probably because there is too much noise and distraction. Maybe you are doing too much. Maybe you just need to take a step back and pause. Look at everything that is going on around you and pick one thing that you will start with. Something that you can achieve without being overwhelmed. For example, if you’ve discovered that what you want to do with your life is to write a book, you don’t have to jump right into it and write the whole thing overnight! Start with a blog, maybe, do long social media posts, get an article published. As you take small steps and move forward, more and more pieces will fall in place. And before you know it, you’ll be living the life you wanted! living my dharma

  4. Not Enough Time.

Sounds familiar, right? There is so much to do. So many demands of everyday life. Where is the time to live your purpose? But you have to make time. If you are reading this, you are already questioning your life as it is. You are feeling that disconnect and discontentment that comes with not living your purpose. You already know that everything else is not enough! So, reprioritize. Put your purpose before everything else, and you’ll realize that most of the stuff that was keeping you busy was not that important for your happiness.

Starting to live your purpose is not an easy shift to make. There is no quick fix here. The only way to move forward is to move through your fears. Inaction leads you nowhere. So many times, we have incredible ideas, insights, and projects that we want to fulfill. But we overthink it – all the work it’s going to entail, or all of the responsibilities, or the downfalls of it. And we overthink it to the point that we don’t actually do it.

The other day I was having a conversation with an old friend, just generally talking about our lives, etc. We spoke about how we do things differently. I told her that the difference between her and me is that I just throw myself into things without even fully thinking through how I am going to handle it, while she thinks about it so much that she never ends up doing it. And she said, “You’re exactly right.”

So, take a good look at where you are in life right now. And look at what’s holding you back. Then find out a way to overcome these obstacles, fears, and inaction.
