Your calling is your dharma, your purpose here. Learn how to find your calling in these 7 easy steps, and find meaning in life.
Do you ever have those moments in life where your brain just hits pause? Everything stays in motion, but you slow down and feel lost, or disoriented. It feels like you’re floating around, untethered, nothing makes sense.
That’s the Universe, knocking your door down and telling you to wake up. You’re not meant to be working day in and day out, with no pleasure to gain. Life isn’t meant to be lived from one moment to the next in a haze—autopilot mode is only for planes, not actual human beings.
What does Inner Calling mean?
An inner calling is what you have always been meant to do. It is your divine soul’s purpose on this planet. It is a unique calling that resonates within your soul. It’s what you were put on the earth right here, right now, to fulfill. The universe is quite huge, and nothing is an accident, not even your existence at this moment. You have a very special role to play, one that puts you at ease and makes you feel like your best self. This is what I like to call “dharma”.

Your dharma is the truest expression of who you are. Your dharma is your divine purpose on this planet, your soul’s essence, the unique vibration only you can carry out in the world.
It’s the one thing you were born to do. It’s an inner calling that you and only you can carry out. Your dharma is what puts you in alignment with the rest of the universe, and when you find your dharma, it is like unlocking your highest potential. Things click into place, and you begin to feel like this is what you were supposed to do all along, like this is your true purpose!
And I’m here to help you find your purpose. I know you must be confused about it, but think about it this way. Your inner calling is your one true purpose. We all need a sense of purpose in order to be able to function. As humans thrive on having a sense of purpose or something to work towards. We go to school, head to college, work in the field we’re interested in and keep improving right? We nourish our materialistic side when we do this, but what about the spiritual side?

Seven Ways to Identify Your Inner Calling

Your inner calling will not feel like a powerful tug in your soul to do something. It may not even be a divine voice telling you what to do like we’ve heard of in the past! Your inner calling is what your instincts guide you towards, and unfortunately, that’s the one side we’re never taught to develop. But that’s not a big deal, I can help you unlock that inner calling, step-by-step.
1. Let yourself believe how strong your own instincts are.
I want you to take a piece of paper and write down all those moments in your life, where you felt a strong urge to follow your gut feeling, even if all logic pointed another way. Small incidents where you ended up buying something from the shop that you hadn’t even known your family needed, all the way to bigger moments that opened up doors of opportunity for you, like that time you swooped in at the right moment to help out a friend with work or a relationship, without even realizing why you felt the need to get in touch with them right then and there.
Your inner voice, your instincts? They’ve always known the divine truth; we just need to believe in it ourselves. Keep this instinct journal going, no matter how cynical you are, you will believe it when you see the sheer number of times you’ve relied on your inner calling for guidance.
2. Meditate
I cannot stress this enough. Your mind is the vessel through which your soul controls your body. It’s like a divine radio that connects to the right wavelengths to guide you. And unless you are able to steady your mind and help keep the radio running smoothly, you’re going to pick up on erratic signals. Sit with yourself and learn to keep your mind still. Meditation is one of the easiest ways to bring your mind to a standstill and to help it declutter from all the excessive thoughts we take in during a day. It can be sitting still with a mug of coffee or tea at dawn, letting the first ray of the sun warm you. It can be taking up yoga classes!
Meditation can be very vital to cutting through the clutter in your brain and letting your inner calling come through! Here’s a simple way to get started!
3. Identify your natural gifts
What are the things that bring you joy? Have there been things that just feel instinctual to you? Some things might just feel like second nature like an extension of yourself. It can even be something as simple as cooking really good food. Our inner calling often manifests in our life as a hobby or skill that we don’t even remember working hard for. Maybe it was a childhood hobby or something you find yourself turning to during times of instability.
If nothing comes to mind, think of the things you’ve been instinctually good at, things that have always elicited surprising compliments from your boss at work, your old teachers, or family.
Keep working at these gifts once you narrow them down! Even an hour a day will do.
4. Keep a closer watch on your body and mind
What do your dreams point toward? What activities relax your body? I was guided to my inner calling by my body, when it kept failing me no matter what I did.
Our bodies and subconscious mind are deeply connected to the cosmos, and they can indicate when we’re closer to our inner calling. Learning to listen to them becomes an important key to unlocking your inner calling!
5. Work on attaining a healthy body

If we’re meant to be vessels of a higher energy, then we need to make sure we can contain all that energy. I’ve seen people burn out on this path because they focused only on their mental faculties. Your body needs to be just as responsive and flexible as your mind. By incorporating simple exercises into your daily routine, you can help prepare your body for the tremendous journey that lies ahead!
6. Turn down the distractions

The biggest obstacle in our paths is often the distractions we give in to. Where a few minutes can be spent in quiet planning, we resort to scrolling like zombies through our social media or get one more email in. Think about it this way, you work to sustain yourself, but you’re meant for so much more than being a cog in the machine. Sustenance is not your only purpose in life, you need sustenance to fuel your life’s purpose, which may lie in other things. So, take a few hours out of every day, where your phone and laptops are all off.
7. Try new things!
It’s when you try new things that you nurture your soul’s yearning for challenges and growth. When I set out to write my first book, I had no idea what to do or where to begin, but here we are now. I’ve written multiple books, created my own oracle deck, and a highly-successful podcast with over 25 million+ downloads, all by trying out new things!
Getting out of your daily routine can play a major role in finding your true calling. So, don’t be afraid to try new things. Maybe sign up for that pottery class you’ve always wanted to go to. As long as you feel like trying it out, go for it. The idea is to prepare your mind to be at ease in a state of flow, where action follows thought effortlessly. This helps make your inner calling clearer!
