Timing when to slice open an avocado is a tough task. Too early and you’ll be eating tasteless chalk; too late and you’ll be stuck with putrid mush. The worst is when the avocado feels like perfect ripeness, you slice it open and it looks great- green, creamy, spot-free. Excitedly you take a bite but it tastes like it’s gone totally foul, even though it looks perfectly fine. Deceiving little fruits (that pose as vegetables.. Avocados, can we even trust you?)
So what do we do when those avocados we spent a fortune on have gone bad? No definitely not chuck them out, but make a facial mask! If we can’t eat them, another part of our body might as well enjoy them!
As an Ayurvedic Nutritionist, Holistic blogger behind EatFeelFresh.com and upcoming author of The Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda, I’m a big advocate of edible skincare. I believe you should never put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat yourself because they are both going into the same place- your blood stream. Do you want 1500 chemicals streaming around your blood stream? Didn’t think so.
Store-bought creams and lotions contain neurotoxins, endocrine disruptors and heavy metals, damaging our brains, hormones, kidneys and livers. Our skin is one of the main ways we absorb nutrients which is why it is especially important to put food on our skin to increase nutrient circulation in our systems.
Avocado is your skin’s best friend, both internally and externally. It contains minerals including iron, calcium, potassium, copper and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, E, B and K. On top of that, it’s rich in unsaturated fats, giving you a supple glow. We lose fat-soluble vitamins as we age, causing wrinkles and fine lines. We can slow down our skins’ aging process by regularly applying avocado to our skin and of course, eating a healthy diet.
Ayurveda states that each person has his/her own unique version of a health, according to their mind-body type. There are three mind-body types, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We can get a glimpse of our mind-body type by looking at our skin. Vatas typically have dry, thin skin, Pittas have oily, sensitive skin and Kaphas have thick, moist or combination skin.

I know making your own facial mask sounds like the most time consuming thing ever but if you have some avocados that you’re not going to eat, you’re already halfway there. The rest is just sitting there looking silly with the glowing green goddess look for 15 minutes. Not a bad price to pay for smooth, radiant skin and definitely way cheaper, more natural and effective than a facial.
Here are my five favorite face masks to using everyone’s favorite fruit, avocado.
1. Moisturizing Avocado Honey Mask
Great for dry Vata skin. Avocado is super moisturizing and so is honey. When combined, these two make magic.
Mix ½ avocado with 1 tbsp raw honey. Apply to skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
2. Anti-Aging Skin-Tightening Avocado Oatmeal Mask
Great for damaged Vata or Pitta skin. Oats contain selenium, polysaccharides, vitamin b and zinc which promote skin elasticity, fight free radials, strengthen skin’s UV defense and promote youthful skin. It also can be used for tightening and lifting sagging scan.
Combine ½ avocado with 2 tbsp uncooked quick oats. Let sit for 10 minutes so the oats absorb the avocado. Apply to skin and leave on for 15 minutes. As you rinse it off, exfolitate your skin.
3. Acne-Cleansing Avocado Yogurt Mask
Great for oily Pitta or Kapha skin. Yogurt is extremely cleansing, removing sun-damage and blemishes from the skin. It also contains probiotics, which help kill bad acne-causing bacteria. This mask is safe for those even with oily skin because it hydrates the deeper layers of your pores, acne-prone skin is often actually dehydrated in since most of the oil is at the surface.
Combine 1/2 avocado with ½ cup unsweetened organic yogurt. Apply to skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Option to add 1 tbsp of lemon for extra brightening. Rinse off with warm water.
4. Collagen-Boosting Avocado Banana Egg Mask
Great for thin Vata skin. This is practically botox in a mask. It hydrates your skin, prevents aging, reverses oxidative stress, tightens skin and promotes elasticity. This is great both for anti-aging, as well as a preventative measure for all skin types.
Combine ½ avocado with ½ ripe banana and 1 egg yolk. Apply to skin and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
There you have it! Avocado is good for a lot more than guacamole. Next time you’re bummed out because you waited too long to open up your savory fruit, rejoice that you can make one of these face masks! They last in the fridge covered for up to five days so reapply them for the next few days and share with friends and family! Have an avocados-gone-bad night with your friends and invite them all to bring over their leftover avocados for some makeover magic! You can also use them for your hair but that’s a whole ‘nother article I’ll save for next time!
