Venus Retrograde 2026: What It Means for Your Love Life

Venus Retrograde 2026: What It Means for Your Love Life by Sahara Rose

If your ex has suddenly reappeared, old heartbreak is rising to the surface, or you’re questioning what you really want in love, look up. Venus is retrograde.

Venus, the planet of love, beauty and pleasure, stationed retrograde on October 3, 2026 in Scorpio, slipped back into Libra on October 25, and turns direct on November 13. Her shadow period lasts until December 15. In this guide I’m sharing what Venus retrograde 2026 means for your love life, the astronomy and mythology behind it, and the rituals I use to move through it on the divine feminine path.

What Is Venus Retrograde?

Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after the sun and the moon, and the only planet named for a goddess. Roughly every nineteen months, she appears to move backward across the sky for about six weeks. During this time she passes between the Earth and the sun, disappears completely into the sun’s glare, and then reappears on the other side, rising as the morning star.

The ancients who tracked her had no way of knowing she was coming back. Then she returned, more luminous than before, as if the darkness had concentrated her. The Venusian mystery schools saw heartbreak written in that cycle. The disappearing was the transformation. The darkness was the middle of the story, never the end.

Venus Crosses the Same Ground Three Times

During a retrograde, Venus moves backward over degrees she already passed going forward. Once she turns direct, she crosses that same ground a third time. She never fully clears something in one pass, and you don’t need to either. We move through the hard thing, then go back and process it again and again, until one day it no longer holds the same charge.

This is why exes return during Venus retrograde, why old feelings resurface and why you might find yourself scrolling through photos from three years ago. You’re being asked to revisit love from a new place in the spiral.

Venus Retrograde in Scorpio: The Descent

This retrograde began in Scorpio, the sign of the underworld, intimacy, sexuality, death and rebirth. Scorpio Venus asks you to go deep. It brings up jealousy, obsession, power dynamics and the parts of love we usually keep hidden.

The Venus cycle has long been linked to the myth of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess who descended through seven gates into the underworld, surrendering a piece of herself at each one, before rising again. Her descent mirrors Venus going dark, and her return mirrors Venus rising as the morning star. Many of us are living our own descent right now. If you’ve felt pulled into grief or into your dark feminine, this is the energy.

Venus Retrograde in Libra: The Return to Balance

On October 25, Venus moved back into Libra, one of the two signs she rules. Libra is relationships, partnership, harmony, aesthetics and fairness. Here the retrograde shifts from the depths into reevaluation. What does balance look like in your relationships? Where have you over-given? What does a partnership of equals actually feel like?

Venus stations direct at 22° Libra on November 13, and the clarity tends to arrive in the weeks after, as she moves forward through the shadow until December 15.

The Birth of Venus Came From War

When most of us picture Venus, we picture Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus: a woman with long golden hair rising from the sea on a shell, roses floating through the air. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and desire, shares her mythology with the Greek Aphrodite.

She didn’t come from pure bliss. In the myth, Aphrodite emerges from the sea foam after an act of violence between the gods, when Cronus severs his father Uranus and casts what was severed into the ocean. From those turbulent waters rises the goddess of beauty herself, as though the sea took something horrific and transformed it into something heavenly.

I believe there comes a Birth of Venus in every woman’s life: the moment you rise through the waters of what you’ve lived into something otherworldly. Venus retrograde is often the season that sets it in motion.

Venus Teaches Integration of the Light and Dark Feminine

Venus is both the Morning Star and the Evening Star. She is the brightest star, and the dark sky is what makes her visible. She can’t exist without either.

Religion embedded a split in women through the Madonna-whore complex. Be soft, receptive and forgiving and you’ll be the wife, never the one he deeply desires. Be sexual, angry, wild and boundaried and you’ll be free but alone. Much of our inner turmoil comes from believing we have to choose.

Venus refuses this duality. After a hard chapter, many of us try to “switch back” into our light feminine, as if the darkness were a mistake to heal our way out of. You can’t go back to the version of yourself you were before, and it was never a mistake. The darkness added dimension so you could shine even brighter. You can only see Venus on the darkest nights.

The Rose of Venus

Venus is so beautiful that she draws a rose in the sky. Over an eight-year cycle, her alignments with Earth create five repeating points that form a pentagram, known as the Rose of Venus. During those eight Earth years, Venus completes about thirteen orbits of the sun, giving us the numbers 5, 8 and 13, the same consecutive Fibonacci numbers found in the spiral of a rose. As above, so below.

Her eight-year pattern never returns to exactly the same place. The same rose is retraced endlessly, slightly shifted each time. We move through our lives the same way, returning to love, loss, desire and old pieces of ourselves from new places in the spiral.

Thirteen, the Goddess Number

Western culture taught us to fear the number 13, yet it has long been considered sacred to the goddess. There are about 13 new moons in a year, and a woman menstruates roughly 13 times a year. Friday takes its name from the Norse goddess associated with Venus, which makes every Friday a Venus day, the most potent day for self-love rituals.

What Venus Retrograde Means for Your Love Life

  • Exes may return. Notice whether you’re being offered a second chance or a chance to see the pattern clearly.
  • Old wounds resurface. Heartbreak you thought you’d healed may ask to be felt one more time from a new place.
  • Your values in love shift. What attracted you before may no longer feel aligned.
  • New relationships move slowly. Let things reveal themselves. Clarity tends to arrive after November 13.
  • Self-love takes center stage. This is a beautiful time to deepen your relationship with yourself.

Venus Retrograde Rituals

Create a Venus Altar

Place a Venus or goddess statue, candles, fresh flowers and crystals that call to you on an altar. Mine has The Birth of Venus painting right above it, and I swap the colors of the flowers and crystals according to the frequency I’m working with.

Embody Your Inner Venus

Put on a silk robe. Sprawl out on your bed eating ripe fruit. Slowly graze a rose along your skin. Surround yourself with everything you find beautiful in this chapter.

Write the Beauty Into Your Story

Write down the hardest chapters of your life, and next to each one, the beauty that came through it. Look at how the moments that felt hardest actually made you softer, and how what felt taken away actually gifted you more.

Become a Gatherer of Sweetness

The priestesses of Aphrodite’s temple were called the melissae, the bees. They moved through the world the way a bee moves through a garden, drawing nectar from every flower, even the ones that had weathered a storm, and turning it into honey. In small moments, ask yourself: what is the sweetness available to me right now? Choose it deliberately.

Honor Venus on Fridays

Wear something Venusian, spend time where flowers grow and give yourself one luxurious act of self-love every Friday of the retrograde.

Heartbreak Is the Venusian Initiation

The central teaching of the Venusian path is that love and beauty are the spiritual path itself. Most spirituality was made by men, for men, teaching us to detach and transcend the body. The Venusian path moves the other way. It asks you to let yourself be soft and be moved, and to organize your life around the expansion of love instead of protection from pain.

After my divorce, I became obsessed with beauty. Flowers filled every room. I traveled across the world visiting temples, gardens and sacred sites, arranged altars and listened to music that opened my heart. Looking back, my soul was guiding me toward experiences that expanded me beyond my grief.

Maybe This Love Story Is Really About Me by Sahara Rose

The woman who walks out the other side of her descent returns more open than seems possible, more radiant than before the loss and more in love with life, because she knows what that earlier version of her didn’t yet know: love can’t actually be taken. It can only expand. I explore this whole journey, from the Dark Feminine to the Venusian path, in my new book Maybe This Love Story Is Really About Me.
