You met him and it felt like you’d known each other forever. The chemistry was instant, the highs were euphoric, and somehow the lows kept dragging you back to the same old wound. You leave, you return, you swear it’s the last time.
That’s often the mark of a karmic relationship. In this guide I’m sharing what a karmic relationship is, the signs you’re in one, why old souls tend to have so many, and how to complete the lesson so you can move from karma into your dharma in love.
What Is a Karmic Relationship?
The word karma means action, and it’s also accumulation, momentum and echo. Karma is the energetic residue of what’s been thought, felt, spoken and avoided, carried through our lineage and our past lives. Some karma lives quietly in the background. Some of it walks into your life with a beard and a beautiful smile.
A karmic relationship is a connection that arrives to surface and complete a lesson your soul is carrying. Sometimes the ache you feel with this person rises from beyond this lifetime, the residue of soul contracts left unfinished or past lives where love was interrupted. These relationships aren’t punishments. They’re invitations to close a chapter and set both souls free.
Why Your First Relationships Are So Karmic
Old souls often frontload their karma. They choose the heavier lessons early in life so they can graduate to the fun stuff sooner. Your first series of relationships was likely very karmic, because love is the fastest way to clear density.
You fell for the charmer who couldn’t see past his own reflection, so you could become the one who sees into souls. You experienced betrayal so you could know truth. You said yes to the fantasy so you could awaken into reality. Each relationship was a mirror teaching you your own depth. I go deeper into this in my guide to karma and dharma.
Signs You’re in a Karmic Relationship
- Instant, intense familiarity. It feels like destiny from the first conversation.
- A repeating pattern. The same fights, the same wound, the same cycle of leaving and returning.
- Extreme highs and lows. The chemistry is euphoric and the crashes are brutal.
- Your nervous system never settles. You feel anxious, on alert, always wondering where you stand.
- It brings up your childhood. The dynamic echoes something familiar from your family.
- You can’t let go, even when you know. Part of you knows it’s over and the cord keeps pulling.
Karmic Familiarity Is Different From Destiny
Here’s where so many spiritual women get caught. Just because someone feels familiar doesn’t mean they’re your person. Sometimes there’s a reason they were in your past life.
The danger arises when we confuse karmic familiarity with destiny. Some echoes from the past are simply invitations to complete what was once broken. We can also use spiritual language to excuse dysfunction, calling a painful dynamic a sacred contract or mistaking trauma reenactment for karmic depth. Every heartbreak can be a lesson, and we don’t need to keep learning endlessly through pain. Discernment is the sword that keeps your vision clear.
Soul Mates and Soul Matches
When my friend and relationship coach Christine Hassler came on the Highest Self Podcast, she made a distinction I love. We have many soul mates, people destined to teach us something significant through a karmic contract. A soul match is the rarer person aligned enough to go the distance, walking side by side toward a shared vision. Karmic relationships are soul mates. Read more in settling vs. standards in dating.
The Stages of a Karmic Relationship
- Recognition. You meet and feel an electric, almost cosmic pull.
- The honeymoon. Fireworks, fantasy and a sense that you’ve finally found it.
- The pattern surfaces. Old wounds rise: abandonment, control, jealousy, people-pleasing.
- The cycle. Push and pull, breakups and reunions, hope and disappointment.
- The breaking point. Something happens that makes it impossible to keep pretending.
- Completion. You integrate the lesson, release the cord and choose differently.
How to Leave a Karmic Relationship
Name the Lesson
Ask yourself what this person came to show you. Maybe it’s how you abandon yourself to be chosen. Maybe it’s how you mistake intensity for love. When you can name the lesson, the relationship begins to lose its grip.
Do a Past Lovers Inventory
Write down every significant person you’ve connected with and how you felt when you met them. Did the chemistry mean the relationship worked? What can you see now that you couldn’t see then? This helps rewire the belief that the person you have the most chemistry with is the right one. Sometimes the guy who’s exceptionally good at creating chemistry has simply had a lot of practice.
Feel What You’ve Been Avoiding
Karmic cycles repeat when we skip the feeling. Let the grief, anger and disappointment move through your body. Once a lesson is truly felt, it no longer needs to keep returning in a new form.
Clear the Energetic Cords
Every intimate connection weaves energetic cords that can linger long after you part. A simple cord-clearing ritual helps your energy return home. I share one in my guide to tantra.
Let the Space Stay Open
The temptation after a karmic relationship is to fill the void immediately. Give yourself a pause between love stories, so the version of you from the last relationship isn’t the one entering the next.
From Karma to Dharma in Love
When you meet your karma consciously, it becomes your dharma. The wound becomes the womb of your purpose. The woman who completes her karmic relationships stops falling in love with potential and starts falling in love with how someone shows up for her over time.
I share my own karmic love stories, and the archetypes that came alive through each one, in my new book Maybe This Love Story Is Really About Me, out December 4.
