Your dharma is your big why, the reason you’re here with all these thoughts, needs, and desires. We were each born with a unique purpose and this human experience is about remembering ours.

The cosmos decided our path when we were first conceived. And throughout our life, it nudges us towards our dharma. You’re just a few steps away from your destiny.

We are all made of energy. In our body exists three energies, swirling in and out of sync with each other. These energies are what we call doshas. They affect even the tiniest parts of our identity, honing us to be the best version of ourselves. What is the Kapha Dosha?

If your quiz result showed that you were Kapha-dominant, congratulations! You’re in the right place.

Kapha is the dosha of stability. Made of water and earth, it is the very root of life itself. Kapha is a very strong, stable, and gentle energy that mainly resides over the chest. It is the energy that controls the regeneration of tissues and cells in the body. Kapha is almost defined by the way it lends substance and character to people. Where other doshas may be ever-shifting and changing in their ideals and ways, Kapha is grounded in the earth and offers a stable foundation for growth like no other.

It is the energy of endurance. Kapha holds you firm as your emotions and sense of identity get shaken up. Even in the toughest of circumstances, Kapha helps us persevere and weather the storm. It is a sign of great compassion, empathy, and understanding, helping us keep one foot in the spiritual realm and the other in the physical realm, as we live fulfilling lives.

Kapha Dosha Characteristics

The Kapha
dosha is the calm host watching their guests enjoy themselves at the party. They’re the quiet coworkers that everyone underestimates, only to have them pull the rug out from under you in terms of performance and diligence. They are the ones who will patiently put in the groundwork for any action that needs to be taken, and they’re very loyal, hardworking people who are very difficult to anger.

Does this sound like someone you know? Read on to find out more about one of my favorite dosha types – the kapha individuals!

  1. Physical Characteristics:

      • They have very wide eyes
      • They have a luscious mane of hair and lower hairlines as well
      • Their hair tends to be thick and glossy – with waves or curls that make them look like they’re fresh out of the salon
      • They have rounder, softer features than the other dosha types
      • They have a very solid body that looks stocky and well-built

Now, I know Kaphas tend to hate this about themselves, but they tend to be more solidly built. Strong and gentle as bears, there’s nothing quite as soothing as a hug from a Kapha type

      • They have very smooth, glossy skin
      • Tend to be plagued by colds and other mucus-related ailments

If you relate to some of these characteristics, but not all of them, you might be a dual-dosha!

Ways to Balance the Kapha Dosha

Let’s take a look at a few different ways to help a Kapha Dosha find balance once more.

1. Practice better food habits – Kapha Dosha Diet

The Kapha diet needs to counteract the influence of the Kapha and bring vitality to the other doshas. Here are a few simple food-and-diet tips that may help!

      • Add more spice to your life! And food, too: Incorporate ingredients like ginger, black pepper, fenugreek, and cayenne.
      • Eat warm, light, and dry food like cereals and grains.
      • Try to avoid foods that are hard to digest, like excessively fibrous vegetables.
      • Avoid oily food.
      • Avoid cold liquids and opt for warmer drinks, always.

Here are a few breakfast ideas to get you started! For more information on pitta-friendly diets, you can check out my Ayurvedic cookbook here!

2. Few Tips and Lifestyle Practices:

It’s also important to tackle the other symptoms of Kapha imbalances by incorporating smaller lifestyle changes into our lives.

Here are a few easy ways to get started:

  • Try new things
It is vital to keep a Kapha type from slipping into lethargy. Keep your mind active through reading, solving crossword puzzles, or learning something new. Do not be afraid of change; it will only bring good things into your life.
  • Stay physically active
If you want to avoid staying in bed all day, let’s pick up the pace and get your body moving. Try these fun exercises that are suited for your dosha.

  • Spend time under the sun
As a dosha that is more prone to the cold, spend as much time as you can soak in the sun’s energy. Welcome its warmth into your body and mind. Let it keep you warm through the day
  • Wake up early
As a dosha type that is more prone to sleeping in, make a habit of getting out of bed just as the sun rises!

  • Have lighter meals throughout the day
Instead of eating big meals three times a day, break your meals into light, nourishing meals spread throughout your schedule. It’ll keep your hunger in check and keep your body healthy.
  • Bundle up and wear warmer clothes
Wear clothes that keep you warm! As Kaphas, you are more prone to the cold and sudden changes in the weather, so always carry that extra hoodie or blazer around; you’ll never know when you need it!
  • Spend four to five minutes in meditation for greater mental clarity
Investing a few minutes for yourself will go a long way.
  • Spend more time outside in nature
Let yourself feel the sacred pulse of the world through its trees and valleys, its mountains and beaches.
