What Is Tantra? The Meaning of Tantra and the Feminine Path

What Is Tantra? The Meaning of Tantra and the Feminine Path by Sahara Rose

You may have heard the word tantra and pictured something whispered about in the back of a yoga studio. Tantra is so much bigger than that. It’s one of the most beautiful spiritual paths for women, and it has been my path for over a decade, ever since I first studied tantra in India at 23.

In this guide I’m sharing what tantra means, how it differs from other spiritual paths, how it relates to the divine feminine and divine masculine within you, and a simple tantric practice you can try today.

What Is Tantra? The Meaning of Tantra

Tantra means “to weave.” It’s the thread that binds body and spirit, the loom on which human love and divine union are braided together.

Many spiritual paths, especially the traditionally masculine ones, seek ascension through discipline and renunciation. They turn away from what they see as lower or impure in order to transcend it. Tantra roots you into the textures of existence. It invites you to experience all of it: pleasure and pain, desire and fear, suffering and ecstasy. Tantra teaches that spirituality means being so deeply immersed in the human experience that you move beyond good and bad and see it all as sacred.

The Ascetic Path and the Tantric Path

The ascetic path has its place. It’s the way of the yogi who leaves society, retreats into the mountains and meditates on stillness, emptiness and the void. In Vedic philosophy this is Shiva consciousness: the masculine quality of spacious awareness. We all carry it within us, and it can be medicine.

For many of us walking in feminine form, the highest path lives somewhere else. The feminine awakens in fullness. She’s closest to the Divine when laughter spills from her mouth, when song vibrates through her body, when her arms are full of children or animals or flowers. She remembers God when she’s dancing, creating and making beauty of everything she touches. She wants to be filled by life, and that filling is her offering. Tantra is her way home because it honors her fullness and her longing.

Shiva and Shakti: Weaving the Masculine and Feminine Within

Tantra also teaches us to weave together the masculine and feminine within ourselves, regardless of gender. In Vedic philosophy the masculine is consciousness, or stillness, and the feminine is shakti, life energy in movement.

Your inner feminine wants to move through life and feel everything: the love, the ecstasy, the longing and the pain that comes with it. The masculine in you wants to rest in the stillness of pure consciousness. She says yes to the mystery of going deeper, and he holds the container so you stay rooted while you feel it all.

This union reaches far beyond the bedroom. It lets you stay with a creative project through the uncomfortable middle after the first sparks fade, and stay present through vulnerability in love. When a decision is pending, you wait for the body’s yes to settle, and you sense when something is ripening. Learn more about this balance in my guide to the divine feminine.

Tantra and Sacred Sexuality

Yes, tantra includes sexuality, as one doorway among many. In tantra, sexual energy is understood as kundalini, life force meant for Source connection, creation and spiritual revelation. Its purpose is far bigger than sex with another person.

The shame many of us inherited from religion and patriarchy, mixed with what media and pornography taught us and how rushed we live, has distorted our relationship with this energy. Tantra invites you to reclaim your body as a sacred site. Every inch of skin becomes holy ground. In tantra these energy pathways are called nadis, rivers of energy flowing through your subtle body.

When a woman becomes self-sourced in her pleasure, her self-worth expands, her aura radiates and she only meets what meets her. This is the heart of what I teach as sacred sensuality.

The Feminine Can Never Be Fully Satiated, and That’s Her Gift

The feminine will always hunger for greater love, deeper intimacy and higher currents of beauty. She isn’t meant to be fully satiated. That endless longing keeps her expanding her energetic field and keeps her in conversation with the Divine. Where the masculine seeks to rest in stillness, she seeks to be animated and endlessly becoming.

The masculine’s shadow is the opposite. He can become so afraid of the depth of feeling that he shuts down and escapes, because isolation feels easier than being with the full fabric of life. What he eventually realizes is that life is colorless without the feminine. This is why an evolved woman has an endless desire for intimacy, and why a man who wants to meet her has to embark on his own journey of opening and resensitizing.

Your Body Is a Sacred Circuit

Your body is an electromagnetic field, a sacred circuit board. Every body has its own constellation of energetic portals. Some people light up with a feather touch behind the knees. Others hum awake when the inside of the elbow is grazed. Some spark at the neck or the sacrum. Tantra invites you to remember that every inch of skin is sacred ground and every caress can be an invocation.

Most of us rush and only ever enter the body through one door. Slow, subtle practices like breath, gentle movement, humming and feather-light touch can awaken sensation that years of rushing never reached. Slowing down helps your nervous system feel safe and restores presence where there used to be numbness.

Erotic Sovereignty

When a woman cultivates her life force from within, a new confidence emerges. Her standards rise naturally. Boundaries stop feeling like lines in the sand and start feeling like natural extensions of self-respect. Partnerships become conscious choices rather than reactions to scarcity. People describe it as presence, warmth or a grounded glow. The essence is sovereignty: a woman rooted in herself and filled from her own source.

This sovereignty reaches far beyond sexuality. Creativity flows more freely. Expression becomes bolder. Decisions align with inner wisdom. She can take herself on the gorgeous date and buy herself flowers, and she becomes both the giver and receiver of her experience.

Energetic Hygiene in Love

Tantra also teaches discernment about whose energy you let into your field. Every intimate connection weaves energetic cords that can linger long after you part, which is why you may dream of someone you want to forget or feel his energy when you’re trying to move on. If you’ve ever had thoughts after intimacy that didn’t feel like your own, consider that they may not be.

Before letting someone close, ask yourself: will this person disrupt my nervous system, cloud my mind or disturb my field? Your body was built for devotion and reverence. When you source your own pleasure and love, scraps of attention lose their pull, and you only welcome partners who meet you with that same reverence.

A Simple Cord-Clearing Ritual

  1. Light a candle and sit or lie down comfortably, one hand on your heart and the other on your womb or lower belly.
  2. Breathe deeply into your belly and exhale through your mouth with sound.
  3. Imagine any past lovers in front of you and notice the energetic cords that still connect you, perhaps at your womb, heart or throat.
  4. Imagine holding a golden blade or a flaming rose and cut each cord with reverence, saying, “I release you with love. Your lessons are complete. Your energy is not mine to hold.”
  5. Visualize handing their energy back like a cloak that was never yours, then call your own energy home as golden light filling every space.
  6. Close by bowing to your own body and writing down anything you felt or remembered.

Tantra in Everyday Life

Tantra is a way of living, not a technique saved for the bedroom. You can practice it while savoring your morning tea, dancing in your kitchen, moving through grief, or kissing someone slowly with your eyes open. I explore the tantra of kissing, including the five koshas and why eye contact is such a powerful practice, in The Art of Kissing.

Common Myths About Tantra

  • Myth: Tantra is just about sex. Sexuality is one doorway. Tantra is a complete spiritual path.
  • Myth: Tantra is about longer sex or better technique. Tantra is about presence, reverence and union.
  • Myth: You need a partner to practice tantra. Many of the most powerful tantric practices are done alone.
  • Myth: Tantra means transcending your emotions. Tantra asks you to feel everything fully and see it all as sacred.

Tantra and the Dark Night of the Soul

The dark night of the soul and the tantric path offer the same invitation: stay, feel through it, and find the sacred in it. The discomfort becomes the doorway. The real intimacy, love and dharma you desire all live on the other side of the moment you most want to escape.

A Simple Tantric Practice: The Energy Ball

Tantra teaches that pleasure and life force move beyond the skin into your auric field. Try this today:

  1. Sit comfortably and take ten slow breaths in and out through the nose, letting your awareness drop from your head into your body.
  2. Rub your palms together gently, then bring your fingertips close and pulse them as though pressing against invisible air.
  3. Feel a ball of energy forming between your hands, dense yet buoyant, magnetic and alive. This is your own essence made tangible.
  4. Slowly widen your palms and let the energy stretch like silk. If it fades, bring your hands closer until you feel the pulse again.
  5. When the ball feels full, scoop it into your body. Wash it over your chest, your womb and your face, like an energetic shower of your own radiance.

Notice how your skin tingles and your heart warms. The more you practice, the more sensitive your energy field becomes.

Is Tantra Yoga Different From Tantra?

Tantra yoga brings tantric philosophy onto the mat through breath, movement, mantra and meditation, all designed to awaken and circulate life force. It’s one expression of the wider tantric path, which weaves this same reverence into relationships, creativity and everyday life.
