I’m commonly asked by people what they should eat if they’re a cross between two Doshas.
My answer: find the missing element!
The Ayurvedic Doshas are each comprised of two elements.
Vata = Air + Ether
Pitta = Fire + Water
Kapha = Earth + Water
So we can see that both Vata and Pitta are missing the Earth element.
Pitta and Kapha are missing the air + ether elements.
Vata and Kapha are lacking the fire element.
What That Means:
If you’re a Vata-Pitta/ Pitta-Vata, increase Earth-related foods in your diet. That means foods grown literally under the Earth: root vegetables. Favor sweet potato, butternut squash, beets, carrots, ginger, turmeric and other root veggies in your diet. Healthy fats and oils are also very grounding. Think winter foods.
If you’re a Pitta-Kapha/ Kapha-Pitta, increase foods that have the air + ether elements. This means light, airy foods such as leafy greens, sprouts and non-starchy vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli. Think summer foods.
If you’re a Vata-Kapha/ Kapha-Vata, increase foods that have the fire element. What’s fiery? Spices, such as ginger, turmeric, cumin and cayenne pepper of course! Sriracha and tobacco don’t count- we want natural spices, not just spicy Dorito’s. Spices don’t have to be spicy- cumin, cardamom, turmeric and star anise are all great non-spicy spice options!
